20 Jan 2015 World-famous Gary Taubes to speak at Cape Town’s world-first Low Carb High Fat Health Summit
“The theory that blood cholesterol and a high fat diet are the causes of heart disease will be one of the greatest errors in the history of medicine.” With a statement like this it’s no wonder that Prof Tim Noakes has been heavily criticised for starting an eating revolution with Cape Town as its hub. But which side are you on? That is why the First International Low Carb High Fat Health Summit has come about: to create a platform for debate and the sharing of the science.
The First International Low Carb, High Fat Health Summit – taking place at the CTICC from 19-22 February 2015 – will host to over ten internationally-acclaimed doctors and researchers in the low-carb field, including bestselling author of The Fat Revolution, Christine Cronau, and physician, scientist and co-author of the New York Times best-selling book The New Atkins for a New You, Dr Stephen Phinney. Other respected medical expects include Dr Andreas Eenfeldt, Dr Jason Fung, Dr Robert Cywes, Jimmy Moore and Zoe Harcombe who have dedicated their careers to studying this lifestyle.
The popularity of the LCHF lifestyle in South Africa is largely attributed to professor Noakes, whose book The Real Meal Revolution has remained at the top of the South African bestsellers list, despite being met with scepticism and even outrage from some local medical professionals.
The conference is the brainchild of his co-host Karen Thomson, founder of the Sugar Free Revolution online program, and avid supporter of the sugar-free, low-carb lifestyle. She describes the event as an opportunity for world experts to gather under one roof to share studies and stories, and ultimately dispel myths about the fat revolution.
“Cape Town is the world leader of the LCHF lifestyle,” says Thomson. “It’s the birthplace of a revolution that was started by the everyday person on the street, who, despite the controversy and criticism from medical professionals, sees that it works for them.”
Thomson believes the conference will be a “phenomenal” experience for their international speakers, some of whom will travel here at their own expense. “They promote the LCHF lifestyle all over the world, but now they are able to come to a place where there is such huge support.”
Gary Taubes to speak
The most recent addition to the line-up of speakers is the world-famous author, Gary Taubes. He studied applied physics at Harvard University and aerospace engineering at Stanford University. After receiving a master’s degree in journalism at Columbia University in 1981, Taubes joined Discover Magazine as a staff reporter.
After his New York Times article ‘What if It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie?’ Taubes gained relevance in the low-carb debate.
He has since published two titles based in this topic: Good Calories, Bad Calories and Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It.
Due to international interest an extra day has been added to the event at no additional cost to delegates ie other health professionals, and there is a day dedicated to the public.
