SIAL 2014 wowed the crowds in Paris again this week, the 50th anniversary of the famous food trade fair. A highlight of the expo are those products that won SIAL Innovation Awards. Here are the top three of the Grand Prix winners this year – while in another SIAL 2014 event, an SA company has shone!
Gold Award
Twists new food packaging, France
Category: Fresh Products
A ready meal in a box with a separate sauce in the lid. Simply turning the lid opens the tab holding the sauce. The product keeps better and its taste quality is preserved. A fork is included. Can be heated in a microwave.
Silver Award
Yooji, France, organic frozen portions for babies
Category: Frozen Foods
Organic chopped meat or fish in 10g portions, and organic vegetable purées in divisible 20g portions, No additives or preservatives, or salt. Texture suited to the baby’s age. Cooked in France. 12 individually-wrapped portions.
Joint Bronze Award

Notable win for Worcester’s Burchell’s Foods!
Building on the success of the old SIAL D’Or programme, a new event in 2014, ‘World Tour By SIAL’, focused on consumer and retail trends, including new distribution concepts, changes to the retail and/or supplier landscape and the latest innovations and new product developments catching the eye.
The World Tour Award Bronze Medal was won by Gourmet Africa Products / Burchell’s Foods.
Says the citation: “Launched in December 2013, Gourmet Africa is a practical and healthy collection of authentic regional African dishes. Ideal for vegetarians, lactose-free, GM-free and gluten-free and packaged in stand-up sachets made of 100% recyclable PET packaging and microwave-friendly.
The ingredients are produced as part of a socially and environmentally sustainable African farmers’ project in South Africa ‘s first ‘green’ food factory.”
