Tesla looks to expand into sweets with latest trademark applications

Tesla may be getting ready to enter a new market one might least anticipate – candy!

Elon Musk has grabbed yet more headlines, this time related to confectionery!

Best known for its electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage products, but what many non-owners don’t realise is that Tesla sells more than just cars and batteries, also selling beer, tequila, and most recently launching another new alcoholic beverage, Mezcal.

Apparently Musk now wants to get Tesla into the candy business. According to new trademark applications published by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently, those filings reveal Tesla could soon be selling four new candies in the near future called:

Unlike patent filings, which may never end up making it to market in a sellable product, trademark applications are a near certainty that the product is going to be made. This is especially the case for Tesla, as all of their trademark applications, like most recently for the Cyberhammer, have become reality.

According to USPTO, two of the trademark applications were filed on June 25 and the other two were filed June 28, but none of them have been assigned to an attorney for review and approval yet.

Here are some details from the filings:

  • Mango Bolt: Mango bolt contains a tropical flavour “combined with the imagery of speed and power”.
  • Cyberberry: Marketed as its futuristic flavour explosion, the name gets its inspiration from Cybertruck, Tesla’s electric vehicle. It talks of creating a berry flavour with an innovative twist.
  • Supercharged Gummies: Described as “a boost in every bite”, Tesla aims to appeal to both children and adults with its chewy sweets. No word of exact flavours yet, but Tesla makes a nod to including its branding in its marketing. Could we see battery-shaped candies or a taste experience that mimics the thrill of acceleration.
  • Dog Mode Chill: This ties into the company’s dog mode feature, which keeps pets comfortable in parked vehicles. The company suggests this candy could be known for its cool and calming properties and ability to soothe and refresh. “It’s an interesting twist on the usual candy themes, providing a unique selling point in the crowded confectionery market,” Tesla says.

More candy details emerge

Tesla has confirmed its plans for candy market entry, too. On July 16, in the official Tesla magazine, the brand announced it had made what it acknowledged is a “surprise move into the confectionery market”.

But even though the Silicon Valley billionaire’s move into the confectionery may seem an unconventional one, it’s looking true. “Tesla’s foray into the candy industry might seem unexpected, but it fits within Elon Musk’s penchant for innovative and sometimes whimsical business decisions,” Tesla said of the move.
