Taking the plastic out of produce packaging

With the ever-increasing demand for sustainable and recyclable packages, innovative Dutch packaging specialist, JASA, has created an innovative way to package apples and other fresh produce without plastic – technology that’s now available in SA.

The JASA sleever system personalises trays by applying a pre-folded and pre-glued cardboard sleeve around rectangular and square trays, replacing the plastic film material currently mostly used to pack apples. And, of course, the Sleever can also be applied to pack other fruits, vegetables and potato products.

The sleeves are, in most cases, compatible with currently available trays that hold 4 or 6 apples/other fruit/veg.

The innovative design keeps the produce visible in the package while ensuring it can’t be removed without ripping the sleeve.

The sleeve is secured to the tray with a label attached to the bottom of the tray. This label can be used to hold product information as well as the barcode and, last but not least, the design of the sleeve comes with a handle, so the package is easy to carry.

Introduced in 2018 and now available in SA via JASA agent, Goldpack, the Sleever offers these additional benefits:

  • Processes up to 80 apple trays per minute
  • Has a very short changeover time of less than five minutes
  • Hygienic design and is very easy to operate
  • Is a compact plug-and-play machine and can be added to every packaging line.
  • Energy efficient and has an ROI of less than a year
