Spicy food pack scoops top awards in SA’s 2017 packaging Oscars
The IPSA Gold Pack Awards are a prestigious biennial event showcasing the best of SA’s packaging industry. The 2017 winners were announced at a banquet in Gauteng on November 22, with Mpact’s Plastics division taking several top honours for a food package.
The board of judges awarded the title of Best Product Overall and the IPSA Gold Pack trophy to this spice grinder.
Further, the same grinder was presented with a gold award in the food category, and also earned Best Rigid Plastics Product and Substrate Excellence awards.
So just why is this ‘Eco Spice Grinder’, a joint initiative between converter, Mpact Plastics, and Shaft Technical Mouldings, so special?
The citation reads: “This innovation has transformed a three-part spice grinder to a two-part grinder, not only bringing improved efficiencies and lower-cost packaging to the brand owner, but also better value and convenience for consumers.
“The ingenuity of this two-part spice grinder is made possible by using the properties of PET to match the performance of acetyl or acrylics used to manufacture conventional spice grinder tops.
“The resultant rigidity, tensile strength and toughness allow equal functionality, and extensive testing has shown that the two-part grinder easily grinds two full bottles of spices without noticeable wear.”

This entry also won a Gold for On-pack Communication, with the citation reading: “This is a fine example of packaging’s use as an integral part of brand positioning, image and communication. The pack and the brand’s concept have become iconic and continue to intrigue and appeal to new generations of consumers.
