Clarks-Sticky-Plum-Sauce

Plum success for a saucy startup

With all the interest in Asian cuisine, there certainly seems to be a notable gap on SA’s crowded sauce shelves: little local production of suitably styled and priced condiments. Spotting this opportunity is entrepreneur Amy Clark of Clark’s Original Recipes.

Clark has devised Sticky Plum Sauce that she launched last April at the Jo’burg Good Food and Wine show. The sauce, says Clark, is made from an old secret family recipe, and a delicious mix of Oriental spices and fruity sweetness.
“It is as versatile as sweet chilli but can be enjoyed by the whole family. Its great on all meat and especially delicious on the braai, but it’s also vegan friendly and is great as a dipping sauce for spring rolls or livening up stir fries,” she says.
“Our mission is to produce a combination of both contemporary and traditional family condiments and sauces. With all products adhering to good, old fashioned values. We stand for real ingredients, unique concepts, bold flavour and good value. We don’t do colourants, flavourants or preservatives. In essence, if it’s not good enough for our family, then it’s not good enough for yours.” say Amy.
The response, she adds, ‘has been amazing’: “Everyone really seems to enjoy the unique flavour as well as versatility of the sauce. It’s currently selling in over 50 deli stores and retailers nationally in South Africa and can be ordered online through Yuppiechef.”
There are more options in the Clark pipeline too: “We are busy working on an extension to the sticky plum range as well as a few more exciting condiments and these will be launching in the next few months.”
