05 Dec 2013 NoMU launches first offering in ‘products of origin’ range
Cape Town’s ever-creative foodie company, NoMU, has launched another exciting product – an extra virgin olive oil sourced from one of SA’s top olive oil producers and beautifully packaged in a metal canister for stylish standout on shelf. [Click pic to enlarge]
“This addition to our basket is a long overdue, but natural progression, as so many of our products are enhanced by this essential ingredient. It also reflects the relaxed Mediterranean style of cooking in many of our homes today,” says NoMU’s co-founder and director, Paul Raphaely.
“Our search for the perfect olive oil led us to De Rustica Olive Estate, situated in a picturesque valley in De Rust, deep in the Swartberg mountains of the Cape. Good soil, cold winters, pure mountain water and South African sunshine have created an optimal olive terroir.
“Carefully selected Italian cultivars are hand-picked, pressed and blended to create an exceptional quality cold extracted extra virgin olive oil, with characteristic notes of freshly cut grass, a lingering peppery flavour and hints of walnut.”
NoMU’s decision to partner with De Rustica was driven not only because of the award-winning quality of its olive oil, but also because of the estate’s focus on sustainability and the social upliftment of a very economically-depressed region.
“With the introduction of empowernment initiatives such as their Orchard Profit Sharing scheme they aim to develop a farm that benefits not only this generation, but those to come,” adds Raphaely.
“Unfortunately Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is also a huge problem in the local community, so in partnership with the Foundation for Alcohol Related Research (FARR), they have implemented various intervention programmes, including training social workers and educating families on the affects of FAS. By simply renovating rambling local community halls they have also created meeting points to educate and council.”
In its on-going search for quality and provenance, NoMU’s Private Press Extra Virgin Olive Oil, says Raphaely, is the first of a range of ‘products of origin’ that it plans to source and launch over the coming year.
Packaged in beautifully designed 500ml and one-litre canisters, with an attractive and convenient flip-top cap for easier storage and pouring, they’re available on www.nomushop.co.za, as well as on Yuppiechef and selected deli’s nationwide.
Prices will range from R85 for the 500ml and R135 for the 1 litre canister.
