02 Sep 2025 Nestlé CEO fired over romantic misconduct
Nestlé investors face more turbulence after another CEO ousted…
In a dramatic shake-up, global food giant Nestlé has abruptly dismissed [Monday 1 Sept] CEO Laurent Freixe, who had only stepped into the role in September 2024, following an internal ethics investigation.
His departure, triggered by an undisclosed romantic relationship with a subordinate, highlights mounting turbulence at what is typically one of the most stable companies in the food industry.
Philipp Navratil, head of Nespresso and a Nestlé insider since 2001, has taken the helm immediately.
What happened?
An internal hotline complaint triggered an investigation, eventually substantiating that the relationship violated Nestlé’s Code of Business Conduct.
The probe was conducted under the oversight of Chairman Paul Bulcke and Lead Independent Director Pablo Isla, with external counsel involved. Freixe initially denied the relationship, but a second, deeper investigation confirmed it.
The subordinate is not a member of the executive board, but their identity remains undisclosed, respecting privacy
Despite nearly 40 years of service — including senior roles across Europe, the Americas, and the coffee business — Freixe was let go without an exit package.
What this means for Nestlé and its stakeholders
Investor alarm bells ringing: Shares dipped in early trading, underscoring concerns over leadership instability and strategic continuity.
Strategic vulnerability spotlighted: Just months into his tenure, Freixe’s bold effort to refocus Nestlé on core brands like coffee and pet care was cut short. Now, Navratil assumes leadership amid both internal disruption and external pressure.
Sales and governance challenges persist: Nestlé remains mired in sluggish growth, weak sales volumes, and deep share price erosion, down more than 40% since 2022.
Regulatory and reputation headwinds: The company has also faced factory raids in France over filtration practices and a US recall of frozen meals, Rising coffee and cocoa costs have also weighed heavily, compounding investor anxiety.
