Mérieux NutriSciences SA ups its game again

Mérieux NutriSciences South Africa has unveiled the largest of its three state-of-the-art microbiology labs in Cape Town…

Mérieux NutriSciences South Africa has officially opened an expansive new microbiology laboratory in Claremont, Cape Town, marking a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to advancing food safety and quality testing.

With a laboratory footprint spanning an impressive 1 300m2, which together with the supporting admin functions totals 2 400m2, this facility represents substantial growth from its previous 650m2 footprint, solidifying its position as one of the largest microbiology testing facilities in the country.

“The size of the facility, staffed by 50 qualified microbiologists, uniquely positions our Cape Town laboratory to handle very large sample volumes while delivering the highest quality results.” says Valmé Stewart, the SA MD.

“In response to escalating market demands, the expansion gives us a 100% increase in testing capacity, dedicated to processing samples for both quantitative and qualitative analysis.”

The facility has:

  • Industry-leading testing turnaround times and the expertise to conduct large format testing on 375ml sample sizes for specified matrices.
  • The sample receival department has been expanded to streamline the screening and verification of samples and documentation before they are logged and processed. This optimisation enhances productivity and upholds the highest quality standards in the food industry.
  • Centralised climate control and a highly energy-efficient lighting technology system reduce power consumption, reinforcing Mérieux NutriSciences’ commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals related to climate change.

The building was inaugurated on 23 November 2023 by Nicolas Cartier (CEO) and Franck Capdevielle (VP MEA ASPAC & Corporate Development) both joining the occasion from the Mérieux NutriSciences Global office based in Tassin-la-Demi-Lune, France.
