Is this the end of obesity?

A “game-changing” Ozempic-style daily pill could transform global public health, experts have said….

The tablet, called orforglipron, is expected to be available in the UK as soon as next year, costing far less than drugs that have to be injected. A global rollout is expected as soon as nations approve the drug.

Trials found that people who took the pill lost an average of 16lbs (7.25kg) in nine months.

All of the test subjects had Type two diabetes, and they also benefited from significant falls in their blood sugar. Weight loss had not begun to plateau at the point the trial stopped, meaning longer-term use was likely to be still more powerful, experts believe.

Medications that work on the same principle, including Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, have been shown to reduce the incidence of a host of conditions including heart disease and strokes.

The drug works by targeting the same GLP-1 receptors that are responsible for regulating blood sugar levels and appetite, among other physiological processes.

Separate trials are currently examining the impact the drug could have in tackling obesity alone.

David Ricks, the chief executive of Eli Lilly, said: “As a convenient once-daily pill, orforglipron may provide a new option and, if approved, could be readily manufactured and launched at scale for use by people around the world.”
