Cocoa shortage causing you headaches? Here’s a savvy local solution!

With the global cocoa powder shortage leading to high prices and scarcity, local ingredients company, Cape Food Ingredients, has come up with an intriguing and very viable 100% cocoa alternative.

For some years now, CFI has been busy setting up shop in several West and East African countries, notably Accra, Ghana, in particular, with the country a major supplier of cocoa raw materials.

CFI MD, Brian Lanton explains: “The current cocoa crisis has been long in the making, and in anticipation of a very disrupted supply chain we have researched and developed a cocoa powder alternative that we dub Cocoafine .

“It is a 100% cocoa product comprising cocoa fibre. It looks like cocoa powder, tastes like cocoa, is 100% cocoa, but it’s not the traditional ‘powder’!

“However, as the chocolate taste and colour is less, we make and sell a toolkit of augmenting and enhancing chocolate flavours and colours.

“Companies in the bakery sector, for example, can replace 50-100% of the cocoa powder they use. We have a nifty chocolate muffin recipe with 100% replacement, in fact! And the price difference is significant – in all, a solution ideal for the price-sensitive local market.

“For chocolatiers, bakers, dairies and food enthusiasts, our toolbox of COCOAFINE solutions will make cocoa replacement/reduction a breeze.”

The COCOAFINE toolbox includes:

  • COCOAFINE natural cocoa fibres – still cocoa, just cheaper
  • Chocolate Flavours – liquid format, either water or oil soluble
  • Chocolate Flavours – powdered (with or without colour)
  • All the adjunct flavours for chocolate use  – nut, caramel and others
  • Bake/heat stable colours, either oil or water soluble
  • Sugar-enhancing flavours – to boost taste impact in all products
