24 Nov 2015 Krispy Kreme opens shop in SA
The international doughnut chain, Krispy Kreme, opened its first South African store in Rosebank, Jo’burg at 7am on November 25, marked by queues of people camping out overnight in anticipation of an opening give-away of free doughnuts to the first fans in line.
The new store at The Zone in Rosebank is the 800th global shop for Krispy Kreme and it is the first to be opened on the African continent.
“We are very proud that we were able to introduce such an internationally-recognised brand into the South African market and, from what we have seen today, the products have been very well received,” said Gerry Thomas, CEO of Krispy Kreme South Africa.”This bodes well for the 30 other stores we plan to open over the coming five years.”
Krispy Kreme offers a range of yeast raised doughnuts, served with a delicate layer of glaze, or smothered in 16 toppings like cookies and cream, red velvet, cinnamon apple, peanut butter with chocolate and New York cheesecake.
Apart from the 16 different doughnut flavours on offer, the store has sourced a selection of locally roasted coffees, which will make up its gourmet coffee offering.
The store is equipped with a cinema-style viewing design that allows customers to watch as the Krispy Kreme bakers work their magic with the Krispy Kreme doughnut-making machine.
The launch of Krispy Kreme marks the entry of yet another international brand in South Africa. Burger King re-entered the local market in 2013, and was met with as much fanfare and long queues when it launched, and Swedish clothing retailer, H&M, recently opened its doors in the country in early November.
Coffee giant Starbucks aims to launch in SA in the first half of 2016, while Krispy Kreme competitor, Dunkin Donuts, has also expressed interest in opening up shop in South Africa.
