Gold Pack Awards

SA’s 2011 Packaging Oscars

SA’s 2011 packaging ‘Oscars’ were announced on Tuesday, the first time they have been held in Cape Town and a move made to coincide with the Propak Cape Expo at the CTICC. The Institute of Packaging (SA) (IPSA)’s Gold Pack Awards programme – established in 1974 – is entrenched as the premier event for South Africa’s packaging fraternity – and again many of the awards this year went to food and beverage products.

This year the programme attracted 133 entries, from which the judges picked 37 worthy recipients of the golden awards. Food-bev entries won several of the Best in Category awards, and numerous gold medals.

Gold Pack Winner Food

Shave & Gibson Packaging: Spur Steak Ranches Take Out Cartons
The judges declared these cartons – replacing vacuum-formed plastic trays – to be extremely well executed in every respect. They particularly applauded the clever reverse use of KlaFold board, using the
normal kraft back for the printing surface, and using
the triple clay-coated surface (normally the print surface) as the carton’s inner surface, thanks to KlaFold’s food contact
certification.
GoldPack Cremora

Best in Category: Other

Cinqplast Plastop: Cremora Coffee Creamer

The judges couldn’t resist quipping that the ‘innovation wasn’t inside it was on top!’ In their view this HDPE jar with tamper-evident polypropylene cap and user-friendly tamper-evident spout was a clear winner. They were impressed that the spout not only protects the contents but also removes the need for an internal hermetic seal, reducing costs and making the product easier to open and use.
