Pick n Pay’s struggles: will it ever recover?

Pick n Pay, once a dominant force in South Africa’s food retail industry, has experienced significant financial setbacks over the past decade….

The retailer’s decline began after Sean Summers, who led the company from 1999 to 2007, stepped down as CEO. Despite efforts to recover, the company has struggled to regain its former strength.

In a dramatic attempt to reverse its fortunes, Pick n Pay brought Summers back as CEO in October 2023, following the resignation of Pieter Boone. Boone had been CEO for less than two and a half years, prompting a leadership change during a challenging period for the company.

The retailer’s troubles have coincided with the growth of competitors, particularly Checkers and Woolworths, who have steadily gained market share. As these rivals strengthened their positions, Pick n Pay found itself grappling with increased competition in a rapidly changing retail environment.

Evan Walker, Portfolio Manager at 36ONE Asset Management, recently spoke on The Money Show with Stephen Grootes, suggesting that while the worst may be behind Pick n Pay, the company still faces a difficult path ahead. “It’s going to be a tough trading environment,” he noted, pointing to ongoing challenges in the competitive food retail market.
