New Kissabel apples: SA trials show promising results ahead of 2026 launch

Striking red-fleshed apple variety continues to gain momentum in the Southern Hemisphere.

Following its success in Europe and North America, the colourful Kissabel apple range is making steady progress in the Southern Hemisphere, with SA showing particularly promising results ahead of a planned commercial launch in 2026.

At Dutoit, one of South Africa’s most established fruit producers, the journey with Kissabel began in 2023, when the first semi-commercial orchards were planted with a focus on red-skinned, red-fleshed varieties. This year marked Dutoit’s inaugural harvest, and the results exceeded expectations.

The apples developed a vibrant red hue, especially in warmer growing regions. As they matured, their texture evolved dramatically — unlocking a unique flavour that sets Kissabel apart.

“This first harvest has been met with great enthusiasm by our marketing team and local retailers alike,” says Willie Kotze, technical manager at Dutoit. “We’re especially excited to introduce Kissabel apples to select local media, influencers, and retail partners in May, giving them the opportunity to experience the visual appeal and unique taste of this exceptional variety.”

Kissabel apples — developed through natural breeding as part of the global IFORED programme — feature flesh that ranges in colour from delicate pink to intense red. With no genetic modification involved, their vibrant interiors and standout taste are the result of years of careful crossbreeding and selection.

Global rollout

While SA is still in the testing phase, the global programme is gaining traction in other key Southern Hemisphere regions. Australia leads the charge, with Montague Farms beginning commercial harvesting and rolling out brand-building activities including influencer campaigns and TV appearances. Argentina and Chile are also in early production stages, with a focus on understanding which varieties perform best in their unique climates.

South Africa’s role is vital to the programme’s long-term success. “The internal colour we’re seeing is excellent, and we’re optimistic about what’s to come,” says Kotze. As Dutoit continues testing and refining the varieties, the company is laying the groundwork for a strong commercial debut.

With growing interest in premium, innovative fruit in the South African market — and consumers increasingly drawn to products with visual impact and health appeal — Kissabel is well-positioned to make a splash when it becomes available to the public.
