One of the SA food industry’s doyennes, Dr Lucia Anelich, erstwhile head of the Food Safety Initiative at the Consumer Goods Council of SA, has announced her ‘where to next’, following her recent departure from the council. Lucia has set up her own food consultancy business, and timeously, too, with the Consumer Protection Act around the corner which means food safety has become more critical than ever.
Nationally and internationally-regarded, Lucia has a PhD in Microbiology and over 30 years of experience in the food industry, academia and international organisations in the fields of food microbiology, food hygiene, food safety, foodborne pathogens, food-related regulations, food safety standards and related fields. Her broad-based scientific knowledge of food and her more specific knowledge on food safety, coupled with her years of experience, make her a highly valuable resource for all sectors of the food industry.

Lucia has a long and impressive biography … but in a nutshell she started her career at Technikon Pretoria (now Tshwane University of Technology), where she spent 25 years and was both Head of Department of Biotechnology & Food Technology; and an Associate Professor in Microbiology.
In 2006, Lucia joined the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa (CGCSA), where she established and grew the Food Safety Initiative (FSI) for the food industry, a first for South Africa. She was trained internationally by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in HACCP and food safety auditing in the early 1990s. Since then, she continues to consult nationally and internationally for FAO, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). She is professionally involved with a string of other august food bodies.
Lucia serves on the Editorial Board of the well-known journal Food Control and on the Editorial Advisory Board of the newly-established Encyclopaedia of Food Safety, destined for publication in 2012.
