2020 Vision: Global manufacturing, retailing and consumer trends

Tetra Pak has released three white papers on trends that will influence the global food and beverage sectors up to 2020, covering manufacturing, retailing and consumer influences. A very useful resource…

Global trends that will dominate food and beverage manufacturing in the next eight years

Tetra Pak works closely with food and beverage manufacturers around the world. It’s business is to help customers make smart choices that grow market share and maximise profits.

In 2011, it commissioned an in-depth report comprising qualitative data and 50 interviews with manufacturers and other beverage industry stakeholders. The objective was to fully explore and identify the key trends that are reshaping the industry, and help companies—large and small, local and multinational—understand the market pressures that will affect their business in the years to come.

This document represents its top line findings: eight trends that will dominate the industry from now until 2020 and beyond:

1. Plant efficiency is critical to long-term survival
2. Consumers demand more diverse products
3. Food safety takes centre stage
4. Developing markets hold the key to success
5. Sustainability becomes a core business practice
6. Retail brands gain market share
7. “Company size matters” as consolidation speeds up
8. The value chain gets a makeover

The Future of Retail 2020: Six trends that will transform the retail food and beverage industry in the next decade

Understanding the opportunities and challenges shaping the retail space is essential to the success of today’s manufacturers. In recent years, retailers
and manufacturers have embraced new synergies, entering co-packing agreements, sharing market intelligence, and joining forces to develop industry standards around issues such as consumer safety and environmental issues.

Just as importantly, retailers maintain a direct relationship with the consumers who drive the marketplace for manufacturers’ products. By observing the ways in which retailers are adapting to meet changing consumer demands, companies can learn how to keep our packaging strategies relevant, responsive, and one step ahead of the competition.

In December 2011, Tetra Pak commissioned an external retail provider, Planet Retail, to conduct a comprehensive examination of the global developments affecting today’s retail industry. That study has been one important source to its Retail Trends analysis. Consolidated insights are summarised below revealing six emerging trends that are predicted to change the way retailers do business as the decade draws to a close:

1. Retailers come to the shoppers
2. Market share grows for retail brands
3. Technology brings retailers and shoppers closer together
4. Retailers explore developing markets
5. Logistical efficiency is the key to success
6. Retailers lead the sustainability agenda

The NEW consumer mindset: Seven key consumer trends influencing food and beverage purchasing decisions

Getting inside the mind of the consumer is essential to the task of developing market-relevant products. The purchasing decision is an increasingly complex process involving social, technological, cultural, geographic, and environmental factors.

To better understand consumers and what is driving them, Tetra Pak has identified several global trends based mainly on the analysis of data from the
GfK Roper Report. The survey is conducted on a yearly basis in 25 countries around the world and investigates consumer’s attitudes and lifestyles.

The result of this analysis shows today’s consumer as value driven, busy, individualistic, health conscious, pleasure seeking and environmentally aware.

1. “I want high value, not necessarily low cost”
2. “Make it easy to be green”
3. “Keep me safe”
4. “Help me stay healthy”
5. “Make my busy life less stressful”
6. “Make me feel special”
7. “Understand my cultural context”
