Fair Cape debuts new rooibos shot yoghurt

Fair Cape Dairies has launched Rooiboost, a new functional, low fat drinking yoghurt that provides the suggested daily intake of six cups of rooibos tea in a single and convenient 100ml shot, and which rests on a cancer-prevention health premise. It carries the endorsement of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

Recent studies conducted locally and internationally have shown that rooibos significantly increases the body’s own supreme cancer-fighting anti-oxidant, glutathione. It increases the body’s ability to fight off free radicals that cause aging and immune system deterioration, reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Glutathione is produced naturally inside the body and decreases over time as we age and due to other negative factors such as smoking. This anti-oxidant cannot be increased by taking supplements or vitamins; however rooibos has been proven to naturally increase these levels.

Head of research at the Cancer Association of South Africa, Dr Carl Albrecht, explains: ““CANSA research has found that rooibos raised the ratio of reduced glutathione to oxidised glutathione by 100% in humans who consumed six cups a day over a period of three months. This leads to the understanding that rooibos can help to prevent cancer.””

According to Joel Serman, commercial manager at Fair Cape Dairies, the product is an innovative and convenient way for consumers to get the daily recommended intake of rooibos: “Very few people find it plausible to drink six cups of Rooibos tea a day, but with Rooiboost, you are getting your daily anti-oxidant boost in one go,”” says Serman.

Rooibos LTD, the major supplier of rooibos locally and internationally, supplies the rooibos extract for use in  Rooiboost. Its quality seal, a red steaming tea cup, which also appears on the packaging, assures consumers “of the best quality Rooibos used that has conformed to the most stringent processing methods”.

Using rooibos in yoghurt is not new for Fair Cape. Rooiboost is a natural progression from the previous launch of Fair Cape’’s Free Range Rooibos Yoghurts, which broke the Guinness World Record for the world’’s largest yoghurt at just over 500 litres in January 2010.

The Rooiboost packaging was designed by Contrast Design in Cape Town.

Fair Cape products are available at Shoprite, Checkers, Spar, OK, Fruit & Veg City, Pick ‘n Pay Hyper Ottery and Brackenfell and selected Pick ‘n Pay stores in Gauteng.
