22 Nov 2012 Face lift for free range shell eggs
Cape Town’s The Free Range Chicken Co is changing the way eggs are packaged with the release of its own line of shell eggs, packaged in clear recycled PET plastic containers. [Click to enlarge]
The clear PET containers provide more protection from breakage than standard cardboard containers and allow for better air flow around the eggs, reducing their risk of mould. All Free Range Chicken Co eggs also carry an individual green food-safe ink date stamp reflecting the expiry date of the eggs.
“At The Free Range Chicken Co we endeavour to be as green as possible. Our new shell egg containers are made using recycled water bottles and the production cycle is more energy efficient than that of conventional cardboard cartons, thereby minimising our carbon footprint,” says Dr David Allwright of The Free Range Chicken Co.
The Free Range Chicken Co is breaking tradition and selling the eggs in grouped packs of four and ten large eggs for single and family consumption, and six jumbo-sized eggs as their premium package.
The Free Range eggs used by The Free Range Chicken Co are produced exclusively by its sister company Eikenhof Poultry Farms just outside Cape Town. Eikenhof has been farming since 1935 and is the first significant commercial egg producer in South Africa to convert 100% to Free Range egg production.
“Eikenhof aims to lead the way in ethical, quality and sustainable poultry farming,” says Allwright. “All our hens are free to roam by day and sleep in barns at night. Our production facilities are clean and well maintained.”
The Free Range Chicken Co shell eggs can be found at selected Spar, Checkers, Checkers Hyper and Shoprite retail outlets in the Western Cape and recommended retail prices (RRP) are:
1. 4 Large R9.99
2. 6 Jumbo R19.99
3. 10 Large R24.99
The shell eggs are the second product launched by the newly formed Free Range Chicken Co after the release of South Africa’s first liquid egg product, Ready Egg, in August 2012.
