Super Bowl 2014

Best Super Bowl 2014 food and beverage ads

The 2014 Super Bowl was pretty much over by the end of the second half. While the more than 100 million viewers lost interest in the game, the advertisers were the real winners during TV’s biggest commercial day of the year. Here are some of the top food-bev ads aired during this massive US football event.

According to Ad Age, a 30-second spot during Super Bowl XLVIII reportedly went for $4-million, up from a cool $3.8-million in 2013. And with Super Bowl Sunday being the second biggest day for parties, food and beverage companies threw out all the stops on this year’s commercials.

Budweiser “Puppy Love”

Taking the No. 1 spot on both the “awe” meter and the USA Today 2014 Super Bowl Ad Meter was Budweiser’s “Puppy Love” spot that continues the story of 2013’s celebrated “Brotherhood” ad. This year’s ad focused on the connections animals share with one another at Warm Springs Ranch, Budweiser’s Clydesdale breeding ranch.

The ad features Don Jeanes reprising his role as Budweiser Clydesdale trainer and introduces a 10-week old Labrador puppy that forges a bond with the beloved Clydesdales and, through tenacity, ultimately earns a place on the team.

Doritos “Time Machine”

Frito-Lay continued its popular “Crash the Super Bowl” annual online commercial competition where consumers are invited to create their own Doritos ads with the winning spot airing during the big game. This is the first year the contest accepted international entries from anyone who lived in a country where Doritos are sold. Consumers were asked to vote online for the five finalists.

The winning commercial of a cool $1 million was “Time Machine” that features a little kid luring a gullible neighbor into a homemade time machine. The price of a trip to the future? One bag of Doritos. After lots of box rocking and sound effects the man steps out of the time machine and into the “future.” The second-place winner, which also aired during the game, was “Cowboy Kid” featuring a brother on a Mastiff lassoing a bag of Doritos from his smart-aleck brother.

Cheerios “Gracie”

Cheerios “Gracie” ad is a continuation of a campaign that began in May 2013 revolving around a little girl and her family. The first ad features Gracie dumping a box of Cheerios on her dad’s chest after learning the cereal is heart healthy. In this newest ad, Gracie’s dad sits at the breakfast table with her and uses three Cheerios to represent mom, dad and daughter. He then adds a fourth Cheerio and tells Gracie she is going to have a baby brother. A shrewd negotiator, Gracie accepts the fact and then adds a fifth Cheerio and says “and a puppy.” The dad smiles and agrees to the deal.
