Afriplex now offers stability trials

Afriplex, the Paarl-based botanical ingredient and flavour group that is now ISO22000 certified, reports it is offering additional services in the field of product stability testing for the food-beverage and pharmaceutical industries.

The acquisition of two Constant Climate Chambers forms part of this new initiative that will allow Afriplex to add stability testing to its many services.

The company says this has become especially important for the pharma industry in South Africa, where new legislation requires three months’ stability testing prior to launching a new product into the market.

The related services offered by Afriplex include:

  • Long-term and accelerated stability testing for pharmaceutical products and ingredients
  • Shelf-life testing for food & beverage products (accelerated and long-term)
  • Expiry-date verification
  • The development of stability trial protocols

Afriplex’s CCH facility has been validated and is therefore suitable for immediate application.

The equipment, which is controlled at constant temperature and humidity levels, will also be used for in-house stability trials on Afriplex’s numerous pharmaceutical and food & beverage ingredients and extracts.

These stability trials will include the testing of active components to facilitate the development of active pharmaceutical ingredients for the pharmaceutical industry. In addition to trials for microbial stability, organoleptic and olfactory stability trials will also be conducted.

“This is a welcome addition to Afriplex’s capabilities and one that will contribute significantly to ensuring the quality of our own products, as well as that of our clients’,” comment MD, Danie Nel.

Afriplex’s has also announced that its production facility in Paarl was recently FSCC:22000 (ISO22000/PAS220) certified. The audit for Food Safety Systems Certification was performed in December 2011 by SGS. With its head office in Switzerland, SGS is recognised as one of the world’s leading independent certification entities and is generally accepted as setting the benchmark for quality.

This forms part of the of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) quality certification.

As explained on the GFSI website, “the Global Food Safety Initiative is a business-driven initiative for the continuous improvement of food safety management systems to ensure confidence in the delivery of safe food to consumers worldwide. The initiative was launched in 2000 following a number of food safety crises when consumer confidence was at an all-time low. Since then, experts have been collaborating in numerous technical working groups to tackle current food safety issues defined by GFSI stakeholders head on.”

Global retailers and Fortune 500 food manufactures follow and rely upon GFSI standards to ensure quality. Against this background, Afriplex notes” “We are proud of this latest certification and believe that this will open new doors for our products in the international arena.”
