Pick n Pay’s new flagship store emphasises fresh

“This is a glimpse of the future of Pick n Pay. We’re not just trying to reinvent Pick n Pay, we’re trying to reinvent retailing in South Africa,” van Rensburg told staff, suppliers and invited guests at the cocktail party launch of the store on Tuesday.
The 10 000sqm store boasts many of the same features as the company’s successful Pick n Pay on Nicol store, which opened in 2010. According to Peter Arnold, GM of fresh foods, the store is “quite spectacular” from a fresh perspective. It is easy to see why from the array of colour and fresh food that greets customers at the entrance.
The service departments have been strategically situated at the front of the store to entice and excite customers, before being led through the fresh produce section to the dry grocery aisles. The store has also incorporated a number of local suppliers – just like the Nicol store.
The dry grocery aisles, traditionally the ‘boring’ parts of any store, have been given new life with interesting and exclusive products. Customers can now even buy an iPad or Kobo e-reader (exclusive to Pick n Pay) while doing their grocery shop. The store also boasts an in-store pharmacy, rounding off the idea of a one-stop shop.
Like the Nicol store, Pick n Pay took an eco-friendly approach to the design of The Falls store. Skylights, natural lighting, rainwater harvesting, retention ponds and an energy management system are just some of the green elements incorporated into the store. “This is Pick n Pay’s second, biggest green store in the country,” comments Arnold…..
