LARGO OLIVE OIL
Rio Largo olive oil recently walked away with two of the six double gold awards at a ceremony hosted by the SA Olive Association – a voluntary body that promotes the interests of the South African olive industry. It was Rio Largo’s brilliant Freedom of the Press two-litre barrel container that caught my eye at The Good Food & Wine Show, held at the Coca-Cola Dome, Jo’burg.
Brand owners Nick and Brenda Wilkinson were quick to praise the work done by Industri-Bott, in collaboration with Industri-Bag, ITT and Vinpac, who got the Rio Largo barrel to market within a week! According to the Wilkinsons, Industri-Bott, which has the registered design and patent for this product, went the proverbial extra mile. Using François Groenewald’s funky design work, Maediator Printers supplies the labels, and the plastic taps are from Conro Precision.
MINUTE MAID’S LEMON & NADA
Product “naturalness” seems to be the dominant trend in many markets as consumers continue to be attracted to more natural formulations made with organic ingredients or free from additives/ preservatives. Based on the success of a similar product in Spain, and just in time for our summer, Minute Maid Lemon & Nada, Mango & Nada, and Naartjie & Nada boast 12,5% lemon juice, 10% mango juice and 10% naartjie juice respectively.
The product name has an interesting take – lemon and nada, literally meaning lemon and nothing – highlighting that the product is free from preservatives.
The 300ml and 1,5-litre PET bottles are manufactured by hot-fill specialists Mpact Plastics in Wadeville, and feature flat vertical rib panels for strength and a pinched waist to resist panelling. The shrink sleeves are from ACF Labels: DLC Pack, while the closures are imported.
RED LORRY & YELLOW LORRY WINES
It was Heritage Day and very crowded at The Good Food & Wine Show. I watched in awe as customer after customer asked for cases of Red Lorry and Yellow Lorry wine from the Elgin Boutique Wine stall. Curiosity got the better of me and I introduced myself to Ian Corder, the man behind Elgin Valley Vineyards. The concept of Red Lorry Easy Red and Yellow Lorry Sauvignon Blanc was born from a need for a catchy topical brand-name where the packaging would do the marketing. He also wanted something fresh and different, not intended to be serious, and, judging by response so far, it’s spot on!
Using Creative Performance’s retro design, the labels are printed by Paarl Labels on an MPS EC330 UV Flexo press on Premicast label stock carrying an acrylic adhesive. Printing consists of three process colours plus the themed red and yellow as spot colours. Both variants are sealed with Schmidt Rhyner matt UV varnish. The metal screw closures are from MCG Industries.
BELFIELD’S SPECIAL SASH LABEL
Also featured on the Elgin Boutique Wines’ stand at The Good Food & Wine Show was the sash label used on Belfield Elgin wines. Owner Mike Kreft’s idea to feature a sash label originated from the creative talents of Kate Butcher, a friend of Mike’s daughter, who at the time had just graduated as a graphic designer from Stellenbosch University. From then on it was a combination of family involvement and Brackenfellbased Coastal Labels that brought it all together.
What began as a red sash evolved into this very upmarket and classy label with a foiled Protea and delicate UV ink watermark that uses a premium cast gloss paper especially manufactured for the wine industry. The labels are hand applied and slit to the required size. The bottle is from Consol Glass and the capsule is supplied by Columbit.
