Fire at Nestlé’s Potchefstroom factory stops production

A clean-up process has commenced at Nestlé South Africa’s Cremora creamer manufacturing factory in Potchefstroom, North West province, where a fire broke out in the afternoon of Friday July 11. The blaze started in the electrical control room.

There were no injuries sustained and all employees were evacuated and accounted for.

“We have our people on site assessing the situation and we will know the extent of the damage to the factory by next [this] week. In the meantime, operations at factory have been temporarily suspended, but we are doing everything in our power to ensure that the situation is normalised as soon as possible,” said Motshidisi Mokwena, spokesperson for Nestlé South Africa.

A business continuity plan is currently underway and the company has made contingencies to ensure supply ofthe product is not disrupted during the temporary closure. Mokwena added that the company has multiple factories that manufacture Cremora.

In February 2012, Nestlé South Africa officially opened this plant, then its tenth manufacturing facility in South Africa, adding capacity to the existing creamer factory in Babelegi, Gauteng.
