In 1999, the Department of Health undertook a study to assess if South Africans were eating healthily. The results showed that most children do not get enough food and micronutrients in their daily meals and this meant that children were underweight and not at the height for their age. To assist with this, the government launched a fortification programme that focused on wheat flour and maize meal being fortified with zinc, iron and vtamins A and B. Since milk can be used as a fortification vehicle, Nestlé has launched NIDO Everyday, a powdered milk blend that contains vitamin A which is essential for good vision, vitamins B2 and B12, zinc and iron, all of which are good for building strength and immunity. The use of this product will enable South Africans to increase their micronutrient intake. NIDO Everyday is a milk blend which is made from skimmed milk, whey powder, buttermilk and glucose syrup to which vegetable fat has been added. It is available in a 500g sachet and can be consumed by the entire family, at any time of the day, says Nestlé Nido Everyday will enjoyed by children, it adds, as it has a great taste. Despite the fact that a little of the milk fat has been replaced with vegetable fat, NIDO Everyday is a complete and nutritious milk powder, Nestlé asserts. One sachet makes approximately 15 glasses or 3,8 litres and it has both Halaal and Milchik approval.
